How to Teach Your Dog to High-Five (and how it’s more than just a cute trick)


There’s something about a dog high fiving their human that makes us feel connected to them. Whether it’s part of your daily routine or a party trick to entertain, this simple gesture is more than just cute. It’s a connection.

Teaching your dog to high-five isn’t just about showing off though. It’s about bonding, confidence, and giving your dog a chance to interact with you.

Why Teach It?

  • Connection: Teaching new tricks is one of the best ways to deepen your bond with your dog. It builds trust and makes you both feel more in tune.
  • Confidence: For shy or anxious dogs, learning something new (and getting rewarded for it!) can be a huge boost.
  • Mental stimulation: Dogs love a challenge. Training taps into their brain and keeps them engaged. Perfect for a rainy day or if you can’t get out for a walk!
  • Joy: Seeing your dog give you a high-five is guaranteed to make your day better.

How to Teach It (In 3 Calm, Easy Steps)

  1. Start with a paw shake: If your dog already knows how to shake hands, you’re halfway there. If not, encourage them to offer their paw by gently lifting it and saying “shake” or “paw,” then rewarding immediately.
  2. Raise the bar: Once your dog is reliably offering their paw, start holding your hand slightly higher and open, like you would for a high-five. Say “high five!” and reward any paw movement toward your hand.
  3. Mark and reward: As soon as their paw touches your palm (even lightly), give them praise and a treat. Repeat in short sessions (5–10 minutes max) and always end on a positive note.
